Pittsfield Intermodal Transportation Center
New DevelopmentPittsfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts
McMahon was retained by the Berkshire Regional Transit Authority (BRTA) to complete a feasibility study and provide project management services for the design and construction of the Pittsfield Intermodal Transportation Center. The center serves as a single facility linking three major modes of transportation, including intercity rail, intercity bus, and regional bus service. As part of a joint venture team, McMahon was the lead consultant through feasibility, planning and design. Our work further included the design and preparation of technical specifications for the implementation of a traffic signal priority control system at three intersections adjacent to the proposed BRTA facility. This system, utilized by emergency vehicles and BRTA buses, operates with high and low priority pre-emption for these vehicles. The design included timing adjustments, proposed signal structure locations, and traffic signal hardware and software upgrades at the coordinating intersections.

Dorchester, Suffolk County, Massachusetts
McMahon was on the transit-oriented development (TOD) team which facilitated redevelopment of the Ashmont Station.
Combining renovations to the existing station configuration, built in 1927, with redevelopment plans, has improved transit access, and economic stimulus to the area around the largest MBTA station in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood. The resulting TOD project included six stories of mixed income housing with ground floor retail space, and improved bus circulation at this important intermodal center. McMahon provided circulation analysis and construction staging for buses, vehicles and pedestrians. Coordination of the station reconstruction, TOD construction, and maintaining bus service through temporary relocations were among the challenging construction staging efforts resolved for this project. |

Palm Beach Gardens Transit Study
Palm Beach Gardens, Palm Beach County, Florida
A citywide transit study was completed including assessment of existing routes and services in coordination with Palm Tran. A long-range strategy was developed including alternative locations for an Intermodal Transit Facility, a local circulator serving the Gardens Mall Activity Center, and coordination with future Tri-Rail and/or Florida East Coast Railroad Transit Services. Alternative funding sources were examined and recommendations proposed. The recommended plan centered around the Gardens Mall Activity Center circulator plus coordination with the I-95 “Martin County Express” bus service planned to operate in the HOV lanes of I-95 in 2009 which is a precursor of north/south rail service in the more distant future. |
