Woodland Road Safety Improvements
City of Newton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts
As a result of a pedestrian fatality, the City of Newton asked McMahon to recommend enhancements to pedestrian and vehicular safety on Woodland Road. The campus of Lasell College fronts both sides of Woodland Road, along with neighborhood residential uses, resulting in consistent pedestrian’s usage. A thorough investigation of traffic and pedestrian safety was conducted, including pedestrian flows, travel characteristics, crash data, enforcement and roadway lighting. McMahon’s recommended installation of two raised intersections to calm travel speeds and better define crosswalks were part of the overall improvements which included signs and pavement markings. The community quickly adopted the recommendations which were built by the City. |

Run-off-the-Road Crash Analysis
Miami, Miami-Dade County, Florida
McMahon was retained by – Florida Department of Transportation, District 6 to
provide a crash analysis of Tamiami Trail, a two-lane, undivided state road with a canal running parallel to the roadway. Using crash records obtained from the department for 21 miles of roadway, crash patterns were assessed to determine the incidence of run-off-the-road crashes. Field reviews sought to determine any roadway operational issues that contributed to the crashes. Based on the findings, a tensioned cable guardrail system was recommended to the department to prevent wayward vehicles from entering the canal. While not preventing run-off-the-road crashes, it did prevent the primary cause of fatal accidents outside the roadway. |
